How to install locks on garage doors with your own hands

Turn a garage into a reliable home for your beloved car will help you a quality castle, which will become an insurmountable barrier for intruders. Garage locks due to operational features (the desired production of burglars in the form of your car, environmental impact, skewing of the gate or gate) are separated into a separate group of locking devices, in the selection and installation of which neither savings nor haste are permissible. What locks are used to equip the garage and how to properly install them, let's try to understand the article.

Locks for garage doors: types and features

Before discussing garage locks, we recall that the construction of the garage garage door includes two swinging doors, one of them has a gate. Fully closed doors from the inside are fixed to bolts, latches, special hooks. Enter the garage can be through the gate in the sash, which means that the locking device is slammed into it.

Garage can be equipped with the following types of locks: rack, hinged, mortise and overhead (cylindrical and reweld), each of which has its advantages and, of course, disadvantages.

Rack locks

Not so long ago in the markets of locking devices there was no today's variety of locks, so to lock the garage everywhere used rack-and-bulky constructions with a large key. To open the wicket, it was necessary to put the key in the well and, putting enormous efforts, push inside. The huge amount of effort, the heavy key, low level of secrecy and burglar resistance, overcame the only advantage of the rack lock - its strength. It is for these reasons that locks of racket type are practically not found today.

Padlocks

The old, good method of locking garage doors is the use of padlocks, which today in a large range can be bought in specialized stores. Installation of such a lock is possible only after welding to the outside of the flap of the special hinges.

Locking devices of the hinged type are functional, simple and relatively reliable in operation, and are also able to provide a good degree of burglar resistance of the object, however, they are not without drawbacks: one of them is the external installation method. So, using the mount, the attacker can knock down the lock, which means it's difficult to talk about 100% protection of the garage construction.

To secure the locking device of your garage, it is better to use a hinged lock of streamlined shape with a detachable locking finger instead of the bow. Hardened steel, from which the device is made, an additional coating that gives stability, and a more streamlined geometry exclude the possibility of an accurate impact and sawing of the lock.

Mortise and overhead locks

A special place in the group of garage locks is occupied by locking devices of a mortise and an overhead type.

Mortise locks  are fixed inside the door-wicket by means of a face plate with a thickness of at least 2.5 mm, which is sometimes a weak link of the locking system. To exclude the possibility of damaging it at the moment of mechanical impact on the gate, it is necessary to make sure that it is fixed to the lock body as tightly as possible.

Installation of the same overhead locks  is made from the inside of the garage door. When choosing an overhead locking device, try to avoid the grossest mistake of many car owners - since the possibility of hackers entering the object, for example, through a hole in the wall, is unlikely, the lock must be unlocked from the inside only with a key. Guarantee of 100% safety of the car in this case is the impossibility of opening the gate from the inside.

The most important role in locks of the overhead type belongs to the bolt, through which the gate closes. It is only necessary to lock the lock, as the bolt comes out of its hull, and, conversely, when unlocked, it hides inside. The greater number of cylindrical bars forming the bolt provides more reliable protection of the object, besides at the moment of mechanical impact, the impact load will be distributed throughout the body, preventing its rapid failure.

It is impossible not to mention about locking devices of cylinder and lever type, which recently are considered the most popular locks for a garage. Cylinder Locks, thanks to a complex code system, perfectly resist the influence of skeleton keys. However, an attacker can easily cut down if, of course, there is no special protection against drilling a cylinder.

The best option for protecting your garage will definitely be back-up system, the secret part of which forms a pack of curly plates, in the cutouts of which the bolt stand moves.

Thanks to the high security of the lock secret mechanism, the presence of protective armor plates, the correctly chosen configuration of the lever, the huge number (more than 1 000 000) of key combinations, impressive dimensions and increased strength, the possibility of sawing a lock, breaking with the help of skeleton keys and other improvised means is completely excluded.

Installing the lock on the garage door

So, if you have decided to cut the lock into the garage door yourself, then you will be missed only if you use the simplest locking devices. The other locks will require preliminary preparation and careful planning of all operations, otherwise you risk incorrectly installing the locking device, violating its functionality or even integrity.

Materials and Tools

What tools and materials will you need to equip the garage with a reliable and durable lock? First of all - a metal plate and a lock, a steel corner, a drill, screws and an electric welding machine.

The technology of installing a garage lock

  1. Having determined the type of the locking device and checking the serial number of the keys, you should start preparing: the metal plate, on which the lock will be installed in the future, is overlapped welded to the garage gates. When using a padlock, you will need to weld 2 fasteners on 2 flaps.
  2. On the welded plate, the zones of the future holes for fastening screws for the front mounting of the locking system are marked and carefully drilled. To install a padlock type, you need to pre-purchase special fasteners for the arc.
  3. In the frame of garage doors are cut for bolts and grooves for fixing the end.
  4. After installing the lock, the correctness of the fastening is checked.
  5. In the outer metal sheet, a keyhole is made, exactly corresponding to the profile of the lock, then cut out.

The use of a steel corner will further strengthen the counterpart, which will include bolts. For this installation all fixing holes are used, and this allows you to maximally protect your garage from unauthorized hacking. In doing so, it must be remembered that the points of attachment of the locking system from the outside should be invisible.
