Types of insulation materials for garage doors
Lately, a lot of different materials have appeared, intended for the insulation of building structures. The main condition for their effective application is the right choice for this or that situation. It is important to take into account such qualities of heat-insulating materials as hygroscopicity, resistance to fire, convenience in work, and, of course, price. So, what is the best way to insulate the garage doors? Here is the list of materials that are used most often:
Mineral (stone) wool.
This heat-insulating material does not burn, has excellent thermal insulation characteristics. Produced by manufacturers in the form of rolls or slabs. But mineral wool has one very significant drawback: it is very hygroscopic, and it is impossible to mount this material without waterproofing, as, having saturated with moisture, it loses its thermal insulation properties. The mineral wool is laid along with the perforated film, so the issue of waterproofing and the necessary air gap is also solved. The layer of thermal insulation from mineral wool is covered with sheets of fiberboard, chipboard or OSB. The cost of this material is quite high.
Glass wool.

Styrofoam.

How to insulate the garage doors with polystyrene foam
Carrying out the insulation of the garage doors with foam plastic, you should adhere to a simple algorithm of actions:
We measure the door leaf. We purchase the necessary materials: a wooden beam of 40x40 mm, it will go to the frame. Self-tapping screws 25 and 40 mm. Plates of foam plastic thickness of 7 cm, construction foam, liquid nails, sheets of plywood or fiberboard. Work on the insulation of garage doors is best carried out in warm and dry weather. If the air temperature is low, moisture may condense on the surface of the metal, which will not allow the foam to adhere well. In the intense heat of carrying out such work is also undesirable.
Before insulating the garage doors, their surface must be thoroughly cleaned of dirt and rust, treated with degreasing compound, apply a primer coat. Next, we begin the fabrication of the frame: we prepare the bars of the necessary size along the perimeter of the canvas, in several places we drill holes in the edges of the gate stiffness, for self-tapping screws.
In the parallel bars, too, we drill holes for twisting the screws in the pot. Screws the screeds on the top and bottom of the sheet, fix the vertical bars to the longitudinal bars with liquid nails and additionally fix them with screws. After that, we cut out the sheets of foam of the correct size, pinpoint the liquid nails on the sheet, and press it firmly against the metal.
It is necessary to wait a while for the glue to partially harden. Now it remains only to cover the insulation layer with plywood or fiberboard.
To eliminate the cracks between the sheets of foam and the wooden frame, use a mounting foam. After the foam has completely hardened, the swollen excess should be cut off.
To seal and seal joints between foam sheets use isolon tape with a sticky back surface, it perfectly retains heat and does not allow moisture.
From the outside of the gate, it is superfluous to fix a thick rubber strip so that its lower edge snaps tightly to the ground. Rubber will not let the cold penetrate from the bottom of the gate.
On the perimeter of the gate you need to glue rubber seals. After that, the garage doors will be closed, like a door in the refrigerator - tightly and securely. Warming of the gate with expanded polystyrene is carried out in the same way. Sheets of insulation are perfectly glued to the surface of the metal with a mounting foam.
Additional measures for the warmth of the garage
Despite the fact that the insulation of the garage doors is effective in itself, it is superfluous to know about some additional measures that will help to keep the heat as much as possible.
First, it is very desirable to make a door in the gate, so as not to open them every time, going into the garage.
Secondly, if you make a veil of tarpaulin inside the garage just outside the gate, it will keep the heat inside well. In addition, it is very important that all the hinges and locks on the gate be adjusted and the doors close well. Do not be lazy in time to lubricate the hinges, monitor the condition of the locks, and the metal insulated hinged doors will serve you for several decades without causing much trouble.
If the gate on top of the insulation layer and the skin is pasted with foamed polyethylene with foil coating, this will help to save heat more effectively. All of the above measures are necessary to create the most favorable conditions inside the garage for the storage and repair of vehicles. If all work on the insulation of the gate is carried out correctly, the temperature inside the garage that is not even heated will not fall below + 5C, which corresponds to SNiP 21-02-99. This will allow the car to remain better in the cold season, and, therefore, serve the owners longer.
