Dymnik, we choose, we establish how to do it correctly

"Umbrella on the pipe", "Flyugarka on the pipe," "Cap on the pipe" - here are just a few names of the smoke - quite an interesting element of the design of the roof. What is it, why install a smokestack on the pipe, how to choose and install a smokehouse, you will find the answers to all these questions in our publication.

The purpose of installation of a smoke detector on the pipe

The purpose of the installation of smoke

This design is used not only on chimneys. Dymnikami also close the ventilation terminals, flue, etc. They look like small canopies on the pipe. There are a lot of options for design of smoke detectors, and to a person far from technical subtleties of construction work, it can seem just a simple decoration, which is not necessary to use.

In practice, things are very different, and the beautiful appearance of the smokehouse is by no means the most important characteristic of it. In addition, that this element, no doubt, adorns the roof, it also protects the pipe from falling into the atmospheric precipitations and debris - fallen leaves, branches, etc. In addition, the smoke box protects the top of the pipe from premature failure. This is especially important when installing a smoke box on a brick pipe. Simply put, the fog is designed to protect the pipe from debris and premature failure (brick). At the same time, it performs an aesthetic function, being the decoration of the roof.

Classification of fumes by material of manufacture

When choosing a smokehouse, it is necessary first of all to focus on its functionality, and not the appearance.

Copper smokehouse

The characteristics of the product and its appearance are directly dependent on the material from which it is made. The most interesting in this regard are copper fumes. Such a canopy will last a very long time, without ceasing to please the owners with their appearance, provided that all works on its installation have been made correctly and in strict accordance with the requirements.

When installing copper fumes, it is necessary to take into account the fact that copper, when in contact with other metals, begins to oxidize intensively, which can lead to premature failure of the product. Therefore, during the installation you need to use only copper or coppered parts fasteners. If the installation of the smokescreen is correct, it will serve several decades without problems. Moreover - over time, the copper smoky becomes more attractive, becoming covered with a patina, which gives it a similarity with the old products. The canopy is designed for a service life of at least 50 years.

Steel Smoke Detector

Steel Smoke Detector

Steel hoods on the chimney pipes are not as durable as their copper counterparts. But they are much cheaper. With the proper equipment and observance of the installation conditions, the steel product will last 10-15 years. The stainless steel smoker is designed for about 30 years of service.

Smoke from zinc-titanium

Smoke from zinc-titanium

Zinc-titanium is deservedly popular in roofing. This is due to its operational and technical characteristics, which are very close to copper. The smokestack, made of zinc-titanium, is very durable, as well as copper and serves not less than 50 years, provided that the installation rules are observed. Species of smoke detectors according to design features

Dymniki differ not only in the material of manufacture, but also in their design features. So, the simplest, standard smokehouse is made in the form of a simple canopy in the form of a flat lid or a cone mounted on the top of the chimney. Modern products are characterized by a variety of shapes and designs, among them you can often find real works of art, for example, forged fumes.

forged smokehouse

In addition, the new forms of modern smokers provide some technological advantages to the smokers in comparison with older models.

Modern architectural forms of structures put forward new conditions for the appearance of fly vans. For example, on the roof of a house built in the style of "modern" it would be appropriate to look like a smokehouse with a flat lid.

Dymnik with flat lid

On the roof of a building built in European style, it is best to install a smokestack with the upper part in the form of a hemisphere.

Dymnik-hemisphere

It is often used with a lid with a cover that has several skates.

bulb

This design provides good ventilation and protection against snow and ice accumulation during the winter.

A considerable popularity is enjoyed by smoke detectors equipped with weather vanes.

Dymnik with weather vane

The weathervane is often given the form of animals, fairy-tale characters, some deity, etc. In any case, the choice remains with the owner and depends on the overall style of the building and the appearance of the roof.

Sometimes the owners prefer models that are not particularly decorative, but provide more convenience in the process of operation. These include, for example, smoke detectors with a vent hole, which allows the combustion products to exit the chimney without hindrance.

If wood or peat is used as fuel in the house, and the roof is made of combustible materials (straw, shingles, shingles), when selecting and installing a smoker, it is necessary to provide for the presence of a spark trap.

spark collector

Problems with sparks are very common when using braziers. The reason for this is the insufficient height of the pipe. Spark traps are made of fine-meshed (5x5, 6x6 mm) mesh and stainless steel. The grid is fixed to a metal frame. The scraper is installed directly in the chimney shaft, or along the perimeter of the smoker. In the second case, there will be some difficulties in cleaning the chimney from soot.

Helpful Hint: If the house is heated by wood, do not use colored metal smokers: they are quickly covered with soot, and the paint layer burns out under the influence of high temperature. For a stove, fireplace and any other chimney, which is less than five meters in length, a smoke from heat-resistant materials - copper and stainless steel - is suitable. These materials are less susceptible to oxidation and corrosion processes, and have a very long service life.

Manufacture of smoke detectors - general advice and recommendations

One of the functions of the smoke box is to increase the aesthetic appeal of the chimney. Therefore, quite often in the design of the product used a variety of forged and cut from the metal elements. With the same purpose, weather vanes are installed on the upper part of the fumes. Although the attitude of professional builders to weathervanes is often negative, because, according to them, constant vibration from rotating elements does not influence the pipe in the best way (especially for brick pipes).

Any smokehouse has a fairly simple basic structure:

damper construction

cover-umbrella, which provides protection from precipitation and debris, legs-posts that are attached to the pipe, a curved corner - a drip. A drop of water from the chimney pipe leads to water. Looks like this design is beautiful, effective, and is inexpensive.

You can choose to buy a smoke box, choosing from a variety of models provided by the manufacturers, and you can make a smokehouse with your own hands, using simple tools and materials.

When making a smoke box with your own hands, you have a good opportunity to show imagination and ingenuity, decorating with a beautiful and useful product. Of course, this is not the only plus, since the self-made variant will cost, most likely, much cheaper than the factory one. If you have not previously dealt with such constructions, then it is best to make a simple model, to gain experience and skills. Later you can make a more beautiful and sophisticated mist. For example, it is quite simple to make a semi-circular vaulted canopy.

preparatory stage

There are quite a few people wishing to make a smoke box on the pipe themselves. But not at all it turns out. Thanks to the abundance of information on the Internet on the issue of making fogs, most mistakes can be avoided even by an inexperienced person. So, for the manufacture of a complex design, it is necessary first of all to make a drawing, and to cut out the details of a product from a dense cardboard.

Cardboard parts

You need to check how well the parts fit together, the ability to perform all the necessary nodes, etc. Only after that you can start working with metal.

An important condition of work is strict observance of all sizes. Measurements should be done very carefully, since in the event of an error, the finished smokehouse simply does not fit in size.

necessary tools and materials

Instruments

To begin with, let us cite the requirements for the metal that will be used in the manufacture of the smokescreen:

  • Durability.
  • Strength.
  • Resistance to high temperatures.
  • Resistance to corrosion.

Compliance with all requirements is necessary, among other things, also because it is problematic to constantly monitor the condition of the smoker. Therefore, you need to choose a material with a maximum margin of safety.

In the manufacture of fumes, the following are most commonly used:

  • Zinc-titanium.
  • Copper.
  • Cink Steel.
  • Stainless steel.

Copper products, of course, beyond competition - look very nice, they serve for a long time, but at the same time they stand accordingly. The cost of galvanizing is much smaller, the metal can have a polymer coating, which allows you to choose the coloring that corresponds to the roofing material. In addition, the polymer coating layer increases the life of the product by an order of magnitude.

The life time is greatly affected by the thickness of the metal - the more it is, the longer the smokehouse will last. However, the thicker the metal, the more difficult it is to work with it. In this regard, the optimum value is 0.5 mm.

The following tools and materials will be needed for the job:

  • Shears for metal.
  • Rotary hammer or electric drill.
  • Ruler.
  • A hammer.
  • Marker.
  • Roulette.
  • Metal sheets.
  • A metal corner for manufacturing racks.
  • Aluminum rivets, rivet gun.

make the necessary measurements

Before the start of work, it is necessary to correctly calculate all the parameters of the future smoker, and draw a drawing. It is especially important to correctly measure the diameter of the chimney. It is very important that the smoke can completely cover all the upper horizontal parts of the chimney. For this, it is also necessary to measure: the length and width of the chimney, the distance from the expanded part of the pipe to the top (if the chimney has an expansion). In order for the finished structure to be worn without any complications on the pipe, add 5 mm to the obtained dimensions.

manufacture of a smoke detector

The base of the smoke box is easiest to make from a corner in the form of a rectangle, in accordance with the dimensions. Next, prepare four legs with pre-drilled holes for fasteners.

base with legs

Using the legs, the base is connected to the lid (the fixing is made at the corners of the rectangle-base.) To connect the legs to the base, the mounting edge of the leg is bent at the bottom.

Further, from a sheet of galvanized steel, we cut out a rectangle of the necessary size with scissors, we bend it with an arc. Thus, we will have an oval-shaped lid. All parts are connected with rivets and a pistol.

Our smokehouse

To make the edges of the "petals", do scissors cuts with an indentation of 4-5 cm, then the edges of the incisions are bent upwards. This simple operation will make the finished product much more attractive.

assembly of the finished product

The last stage of the work is the installation of a finished smokehouse on the pipe. If everything is done correctly, then as a rule, complications do not arise - a ready-made mist-box is simply put on the chimney and bolted with the help of anchor bolts.

In the video materials presented below, one more, rather simple, version of the independent production of a smoke detector is described.
