Slate Paint, how to choose slate paint for reliable roof protection

Although the market of building materials has recently appeared many new products, worthy of attention of consumers, the slate still occupies a leading place among products in the economy segment. If the usual roofing sheets for a building or a canopy are ordinary slate sheets with a gray color, then for the roof of the house its owners prefer to use painted material with higher aesthetic qualities. The question arises whether it is possible to paint the slate, and whether the layer of paint will subsequently have a negative effect on the quality characteristics of the material itself.

What is the slate, the pros and cons of the roofing material

In its origin, the slate is a pressed sheet of asbestos cement, when pressed it is given a wavy profile. But there is another version of it, which is flat sheets from the same asbestos cement crumbs.

Its popularity is primarily due to cheapness and economy in spending, often when choosing the material for the roof, preference is given to the slate as a material whose quality has been tested for decades, in performance characteristics of which there is no doubt. Here it is worth remembering:

  • on the excellent water resistance of the material, the properly laid roof will not flow with precipitation of any intensity,
  • on the low thermal conductivity, which is characterized by slate, such a roof will contribute to maximum heat savings,
  • on the high frost-resistant characteristics of the material - when freezing it is not prone to cracking,
  • on the non-inclination of the material to ignition,
  • about the simplicity of processing and installation,
  • on the resistance to temperature changes.

Among the shortcomings of slate can be noted:

  • not very attractive gray shade, which is attached to the asbestos crumb included in its composition,
  • the tendency of the material to form asbestos dust on the surface,
  • the growth of mosses on the northern side of the roof.

Disadvantages of slate associated with a constant exposure to moisture can be fully compensated or completely eliminated with the help of slate paint applied to the surface of the material.

Paint will not only increase the decorative qualities of slate, but will relieve the material from:

  • appearance of asbestos dust,
  • will increase its strength and resistance to moisture.

Of course, the correct solution of this issue in the future may affect the duration of operation of roofing material. Since there are a lot of proposals on the market of paint and varnish materials, it is necessary to first study the quality characteristics of paints from the most well-known manufacturers, it is not superfluous to evaluate the ratio of the quality of the material and its cost.

Let's try to consider which paint for the slate roof will get a high-quality coating and at the same time will not have an extra cost.

The most popular among imported paints is the product of the German company Dachbeschichtung, having high adhesion, long service life, high strength. But the paint can be applied only to slate or natural tiles. The deterrent is the high price.

Finnish paint   Kilpi  It contains acrylic additives that give the paint versatility and allow it to paint any surfaces, including slate, metal roofing, corrugated board. The price of the paint is slightly lower than that of the German equivalent.

A low price, but good performance characteristics, high drying speed and extreme bright color range is distinguished by dispersion paint from the Polish manufacturer Polifarb / Akrofarb.

Water-soluble paint of Finnish-Swedish production   Eter Akva  is based on acrylate, is particularly resistant to alkaline environment, it can be used both on slate and on concrete.

Among domestic materials, one should remember the colors:

  • Polyphene, a universal material for applying to brick, concrete, slate surfaces, coatings are inherent in color stability, water resistance, and a long service life.
  • Acrylic paint Unisan, the creators of the paint provided the opportunity to obtain the desired shades by using high-quality pigments, dissolved in water-based dispersion, the color of the paint does not change either under scorching sun rays or under heavy rains.
  • Paint Butanite, which includes polymers in addition to mineral-silicon additives, which give the roof frost resistance.

If another indicator is oriented, then slate paint, the price of which can be very high in import analogues, in practice is little inferior to domestic paints. The decisive factor in the choice is sometimes the cost of paint - covering one square meter of the roof with paint produced by a domestic manufacturer can be about five times cheaper.

Rubber paint for slate

Particular attention should be paid to the paint for rubber slate. It is intended for surfaces to which special requirements are imposed on moisture resistance, it is very successfully used for painting roofing materials. The basis   rubber paint  - water, it is different

  • high adhesion and hiding power,
  • water resistance,
  • not a propensity to burn out.

The paint layer has water and dirt repellent properties, but if necessary, the painted surface can be washed with a soap solution.

The positive properties of the paint include:

  • the possibility of operation at low (from -50) and high (up to +60) temperatures,
  • absence of unpleasant odor when applied,
  • excellent elasticity, the ability to stretch when the appearance of cracks on the painted base,
  • not propensity to ignite,
  • the absence of solvents and other substances harmful to humans,
  • resistance to wear,
  • versatility - it is suitable for painting almost any building material,
  • the treated surfaces are not corroded, they do not multiply fungi and bacteria.

Apply the paint in two layers to ensure a long-term preservation of the base material. If the decision is made to use rubber paint for upgrading the roof of galvanized metal, then it is recommended to apply the paint only after a couple of years of operation.

work options

We looked at how to paint slate, it's time to learn how to perform high-quality painting of roofing material. There are two options for doing the job.

Significantly simplify the work of painting the slate before it is installed, when you have to paint the sheets laid out on the ground. In a similar way, it is possible to paint the slate in case of repair, if the replacement of the roofing material is planned.

cleaning of slate

It will be much more difficult to perform the painting of the slate, which was in operation for several years. If the material was not originally painted, then a plaque containing fungal formations was formed on it, and the color of the material underwent significant changes for the worse.

Therefore, before painting, thorough cleaning of the surface is required, it can be done with a metal brush or a grinder with a brush-attachment.

In case of special pollution, you can use a high-pressure car wash.

impregnation and priming

Further, the cleaned surface is treated with antiseptic impregnations, they prevent repeated reproduction on the surface of fungi. Applying a primer layer will improve the adhesion of the surface of the slate to the paint, in addition, after the treatment with soil, the paint costs will be significantly reduced, and the resulting surface will look smoother.
