In the interior of any room without fail there are radiators intended for heating. In the process of repair work in the house on the garden or in the apartment, the question often arises: how to paint and decorate the radiator, while not losing its user qualities and without violating the integrity of the interior. Do not twist, but sooner or later there comes a time when the battery needs to be painted or replaced. The ideal option for residents with an average income will be painting. Replacing batteries with new ones is quite expensive. Uncomplicated conscientious painting of a battery of cast iron will add comfort to the room. How to Prepare for Battery Painting
First of all, the batteries made of cast iron must be prepared for the dyeing process. Such a procedure is extremely necessary, otherwise there is a threat that cracks may appear on the surface of the applied paint layer. In consequence of which the aesthetic appearance will be spoiled.
Before starting the painting, an approximate plan of action should be drawn up, taking into account:
- scale and methodical work
- determine the degree of pollution and think about how and how to eliminate them
- decide whether to remove the previous coat of paint or not

Experts in this area advise to remove a layer of old paint, removal can be made in two ways:

This stage of the process is rather lengthy and time consuming, but the end result will pleasantly surprise, and the operation period will increase significantly.
After stripping, the area for painting is treated with a de-oiling composition: white spirit or soda. Now it is possible to apply a primer that prevents corrosive processes.
If there is a need to paint a new radiator in a different color, it also needs to be prepared:
- clear of dust and dirt
- sandpaper
- treat with a solvent.
And only after following the above recommendations, proceed to painting in the desired color.
Paint for heating batteries
There are a number of regulatory requirements for paints designed for painting heating batteries:
- protection from corrosive formations
- thermal resistance to high temperature (should not change its physical qualities at temperatures up to 80 degrees Celsius, do not swell and do not change color when heated)
- must be made of environmentally friendly products.
In cases where we paint the battery in the heating season, the paint should be selected such that it is suitable for the application on a heated surface. Otherwise, accelerated drying will cause a discoloration and unevenness on the surface.
When choosing a paint, it is worth considering the following points:
- enamels with acrylic base have a persistent gloss, a beautiful color, but a poisonous, pungent odor
- alkyd paint is particularly strong, evenly applied, but by analogy with acrylic, it has a sharp odor remaining even after complete drying
- water-dispersion emulsion is characterized by drying speed, but it is quite problematic to find a suitable metal surface for application.
In choosing the color of paint, first of all, it is necessary to rely on personal taste preferences, but do not forget about the interior in which the painted battery should fit perfectly.
Heating radiator can be made ordinary and monophonic, and you can show your imagination and make it more original, unusual.
For example, you can use several colors in the coloring (without fail, harmonizing with each other and with an interior gamma)
or diversify the monotony of color pictures (nature, animals, geometric shapes, etc.), ornaments or patterns.
It is possible to paint the radiator in colors or shades that coincide with the color scale imprinted on the walls, then visually they will become almost invisible, the main thing is that it will turn out to be harmonious and not provocative.

Painting of radiators
Experts advise to make the painting of radiators in the absence of heating (either in summer or when the batteries are disconnected from the centralized heating system).
In principle, hot radiators can be painted, but only with special paints. In addition, there is a large percentage of the likelihood that the paint will not lie evenly, will start to swell and crack and thereby spoil all visual perception.
The main task of painting the radiator is the uniform application of paint layers throughout the radiator area. To do this work, you can use paint brushes or paint spray guns. To paint the outside of the battery, it is better to use a spray gun. The layer, when used, is much thinner than from the brush. And as you know: the thinner the paint layer on the radiator, the better will be heat transfer during its heating. With regard to the inside, then you have to use a brush. In any version, paint should be done so that the surface of the battery does not leave any blind spots.
For a more uniform application of paint on the radiator, you can use an ordinary paint brush and a small roller with foam rubber. The brush will be very convenient for staining hard-to-reach places, and the roller can be used for painting the outer part. To paint the back side of the radiator you need a brush with a curved handle.
First of all, you need to paint over the back wall and hard-to-reach places. Then you can go to the outside. This sequence is very convenient and practical. With this option, the chance to deform the layer on the front part is completely absent.
On the frequently asked question about how many layers of paint need to be applied to the radiator, specialists answer: two. After applying the first layer, wait a certain time and wait until it dries completely. And only after that you can apply again.
The paint should be applied correctly: start from the very top and move to the bottom. Only in this case you can avoid streaks over the already painted surface.
To ensure that the wall behind the battery and around it during the painting is not stained, it needs to be covered with polyethylene.
