Owners of gas autonomous equipment installed far from the central gas supply lines are well known modest device-regulator. The household gearbox, popularly called the "frog", is successfully and universally used on propane gas cylinders and burners. To a gas cylinder at one time "did not quiver," it is necessary to thoroughly study the design of the gearbox for the purpose of adjustment and possible repair.

Reducer for gas cylinder types
Among the numerous industrial inventions, the leading place behind the shut-off valves used as valve-type regulators (valve-type reducers) for gas cylinders.
The purpose of the reducer for a household gas cylinder is to reduce and maintain the vapor pressure of the liquefied gas coming from the cylinder within the regulated limits.
Reducer of industrial production NZGA RDSG-1-1.2 body type is a regulator for permanently preset parameters of the gas mixture:
- pressure of the input mixture at the inlet to the domestic gas cylinder 0.07-1.6 MPa
- pressure regulator 2000-3600 Pa at the output
- the minimum gas consumption is 1.2 m3 / h.
The reducer is installed in a horizontal plane relative to the cylinder valve. The regulator has factory settings that ensure the maintenance of the mixture after refueling household gas cylinders, universally used. Liquefied gas in the cylinder remains at a pressure of 15 bar. With the use of a propane reducer, the pressure drops to 36 mbar.
It is clear that any deviation from the specified parameters of the gas pressure reduction system can result in an accident. Help troubles help to eliminate the occurrence of trouble.
Helpful Tips
The design of the reducer NZGA RDSG-1-1.2 is simple. The diaphragm single-stage reducer of round form ø 52 mm without external adjusting elements and control gauges with dimensions of 150x105 mm is connected to a cylinder of propane (LPG) valve type VB-2 with a standard union nut with left-hand thread.
The connecting dimensions are:
- entrance - nut of the SP 21,8LH 14/1 "
- exit - gas extraction hose for Dy 9.
It would seem that everything is simple to connect the regulator, daily adjustment and gas supply to the consumer.
However, during the operation of gas equipment, the occurrence of malfunctions of the gas reducer is not excluded. Most users repair the gas reducer using gas services. You can solve the problems yourself.
Malfunctions of the gas reducer, repair
Malfunctions of the gas reducer may be related to the mismatch of the pressure rating of the propane or the gas mixture at the outlet, causing deformation and damage to the internal elements of the regulator: membrane, spring, end of the bypass valve and gas leakage.
Naturally, certain knowledge and skills will be required to determine the cause of the malfunction. Find out the cause of the malfunction and make an independent repair by unplugging the valve and disassembling the controller housing.
We will suggest that we use the following parameters to determine the pressure level:
- dimensions of the diaphragm of the reducer
- type and characteristics of the reducing spring
- mechanical force to close the bypass reduction valve.
Let's say that the reducer "frog" is an unregulated version of pressure. More complex reduction systems are used for customized automotive systems.
membrane replacement
The reducer diaphragm NZGA RDSG-1-1.2 is a round insert of oiled rubber-wool oil-and-petrol resistant sheet thickness of δ = 3 mm, fixed by the circumference of the housing cover.
The possible cause of the defect is a breach of the tightness between the membrane and the body. The fault is eliminated to create a better fit of the membrane by lubricating the edge of the lower body part with a sealant. The above-membrane part of the body has an upper opening, which allows communication with the medium.
replacement of a spring reducing
In the reducer for gas cylinders, a long spring of reduction 1 degree is used with the parameters D = 15.5, d = 1.4, the number of turns 12-14, balancing the membrane and inlet valve operating pressure.
There are several reasons for the failure of the reducing spring: it broke, lost elasticity, or stretched out during operation.
It is recommended to replace the spring or install a suitable gasket under it. Replacing the reducer spring, as well as replacing the gasket, do not cause any difficulty.
The repair and adjustment of the by-pass reducing valve is considered more difficult.
adjustment of the reducing valve
The reducing valve is located in the cavity of the housing and performs the function of supplying gas by pressing the transfer link on the return spring. The gas supply is regulated by a special screw.
During operation of the valve, faults may occur:
- deformation
- free-wheeling of the rocker arm
- wear of the gasket.
Adjustment of the valve consists in providing mobility of the rocker arm and replacement of the worn rubber grommet. Ensure the movement of the rocker arm by restoring (turning) or replacing the hinges.
The level surface of the tube end can be reached by grinding, ensuring a tight fit of the replaced gasket.
In the event of the destruction of the end of the rocker arm or the end of the tube, it is recommended to replace them using repair kits of valves for servicing gas cylinders.
Features of the interior of the gearbox are shown in the video.
Possible leakage of gas through the reducer is made by the standard method of saponification of the outlet fitting at the locations of the gaskets.
Helpful Tips
It is important to remember that industrial gearboxes use cast connecting elements (union nut) for assembly, with a characteristic rough casting surface. On the contrary, the stamped connecting elements have a smooth surface.
We pay attention: on the back cover of the regulator there is a marking, along which the name "propane" stands for the gas being reduced.
The pressure regulator allows the device to be converted into a reducer for a gas burner.
